PAIR OF MONUMENTAL ROYAL VIENNA PORCELAIN URNS Continental, late 19th century, beehive mark, hand painted and both signed "Beer". The brass mounted base marked Carl Radler (Josef Karl Rädler 1844–1917). Of baluster form on matching circular socles, with allover gilt foliate decoration on a deep red ground. Both bronze mounted socles inscribed to the upper rims "Das goldene Zeitalter der griechischen Kultur geschichte n. Rahl" (translating to The Golden Age of Greek Cultural History). Both frieze panels figurally painted in the round showing the most important and influential Greek philosophers, mathematicians, poets, orators and leaders of the 5th to 3rd centuries BCE commiserating amongst themselves with names incorporated below each. One vase with the figures Xenophon, Thucydides, Diagoriden, Socrates, Phidias, Sophocles, Perikles, Aspasia, Plato, Antisthenes, Anaxagoras, Alcibiades, Jetinus, Polygnot, Archimedes, Nike, Klio, and Herodot. The second vase with the figures Sappho, Olympias, Philadelphus, Ptolemaus, Aristarchus, Eratosthenus, Theokrit, Demosthenes, Strato, Theophrastus, Aristoteles, Demetrius, Phalereus, Alexander, Solon, and Alexander II. 46.5" height
