Great Meissen figure of "Maria de Victoria"

Description

On a spherical pedestal stands a Mother of God, draped in a long, intricately folded garment adorned with Indian flowers, and strongly relief-sculpted, billowing cloak. In her arms, she holds the Christ Child with a golden cross. To the side, there is a platinum-studded crescent moon. The polychrome, partially gilded, and of high-quality painting with gold accents (added later). Either by Johann Joachim Kaendler. Model number 903. Accompanied by a black wooden pedestal. White ware and crossed swords mark. Height: 44.5 cm. This figurine model was presumably commissioned by Maria Josepha of Austria (1699-1757), the wife of August III. She had already ordered four Marian figures from Kaendler in 1737. See Pietzsch, Catalogue of Meissen Porcelain Sculpture, Kirchner and Kaendler, No. 133.
