Description

Portrait Vase of Emperor Franz I of Austria. Vienna Porcelain Manufactory, 1835. Oval shape, with side handles shaped like snails, featuring a polychrome waist-length portrait of Kaiser Franz I. The signature of the miniaturist artist, Claudius Herr, and the date 1834. (The last portrait of the emperor during his lifetime!) Below the portrait is the inscription "Franz I, Emperor of Austria." On the reverse side of the vase is the imperial eagle with gold engraving. On the pedestal of the vase is the inscription: “In honor of Chevalier Frasa. Gerstner.” Polychrome painting, rich gold embellishments, with the mark of the imperial porcelain manufactory at the bottom. This vase is listed in the catalog of the Museum of Vienna on page 38. Size: 30 cm.

This vase was commissioned by:
Franz Anton Ritter von Gerstner (April 19, 1796, Prague — April 12, 1840, Philadelphia), an Austrian and Czech engineer, builder of the first railways in Czechia, Austria, and Russia (1834-1837).

From:
Johann Claudius Herr (1775 – after 1838), alternatively spelled Claudius Herr or Claudius Heer, was an Austrian miniaturist painter. He was well-known as an outstanding artist of the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory.

As a gift for his emperor in 1834, in connection with his departure to Russia (1834-1837) to construct the first railway in Russia.

Franz I Habsburg (February 12, 1768, Florence — March 2, 1835, Vienna), known as Franz II, the last emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and as Franz I, the first emperor of Austria, King of Bohemia, Hungary, Croatia, Dalmatia, Jerusalem, Prince of Transylvania, Grand Duke of Tuscany, Duke of Lorraine, Cadent, Lower Silesia, Margrave of Moravia, Count of Tyrol, Goerz, Gradisca, Illyria, and so on. He was the son of Emperor Leopold II and Maria Luisa, daughter of King Charles III of Spain.

Gerstner arrived in Russia in August 1834 at the invitation of the Chief of Staff of the Corps of Mining Engineers, K. V. Chevkin. After a long analysis and data collection in the region...He returned to Moscow at the beginning of 1835. Gerstner presented his vision for railway construction in a memorandum to Emperor Nicholas I. He planned to lay a railway between Saint Petersburg and Moscow, and then connect Moscow with Kazan and Nizhny Novgorod. The tracks were to extend south to Odessa.

In January 1835, Gerstner was received by Emperor Nicholas I, who listened to the proposals for railway construction. The emperor's decree on the construction of the Tsarskoye Selo Railway was announced on April 15, 1836. The construction was financed by a private joint-stock company, with Count Bobrinsky as the main shareholder. The official opening of the Tsarskoye Selo Railway took place on October 30, 1837.

On the display side, in an etched gold frame, is a colored bust portrait of Emperor Franz I; lower right signed Claudius Herr, dated (1)834. Below is a banner reading "Francis I. Emperor of Austria."
On the reverse side, a gold-etched imperial eagle. On the base, inscribed "A token of esteem from Chevalier Fras. Gerstner." Polychrome painting. Rich gold decor.
